Early Portrait Photography – A hint of a smile and a tear

Here is one of the clicks of probably a local woman with her kid which was scanned from a negative of Nana’s collection.

What is intriguing is – lack of a big smile on the faces of people. They seem to be holding their expression depending on the manual exposure and shutter speed of the vintage camera. Also, there seems to be looming large light which has perhaps scared the child. There are more than one expression of children in his photos but adults mostly look serious and grim except some who have a hint of a warm smile.

I hope this lady did grow very old and so did her child. Will I find their story? Will this photograph reach them or their descendants?
